The Ondo State government is set to begin implementing a new minimum wage of N73,000 for its civil servants this November.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa made the announcement on Friday during a fitness walk organized as part of the state’s 2024 Public Service Week celebrations. This announcement comes as a commitment to the well-being and economic upliftment of the state’s workforce.
The new minimum wage policy, which follows the recent decision by the Federal Government to increase minimum wages across Nigeria, was initially introduced at the federal level with a wage of N70,000 for federal public servants in September.
The Ondo government has taken it a step further by setting a higher wage for its own civil servants. The planned rollout next month is the result of extensive discussions and assessments to ensure smooth and efficient implementation, according to the governor.
Addressing the gathered workers, Governor Aiyedatiwa emphasized the importance of improving the welfare of public servants, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to making the lives of civil servants better.
He said, “A committee was set up to work out the implementation structure of the minimum wage, and now that it has just been concluded, I will give the necessary approval for the payment of N73,000 to begin.
“Anything we have done for civil servants has never been politically driven. If workers are not happy, they won’t be encouraged to put maximum effort into their work. That is why we have always prioritised their welfare. We shall begin the payment of the new minimum wage.”
