The All Progressives Congress (APC) has responded strongly to accusations that it is trying to turn Nigeria into a one-party state, stating that it is not responsible for solving the internal issues troubling opposition parties.
Speaking in a statement released to mark the upcoming 2025 Democracy Day, APC spokesperson Felix Morka said the ruling party has no obligation to involve itself in the leadership struggles or internal problems faced by rival political parties.
He noted that the political space in Nigeria remains open and active, allowing citizens and parties to freely engage in political activities ahead of future elections.
Morka pointed out that as President Bola Tinubu continues to carry out major reforms, more politicians from opposition groups are choosing to support the president’s Renewed Hope Agenda by joining the APC.
However, he said that some opposition members are responding by spreading false claims about the APC’s alleged attempt to force Nigeria into becoming a one-party system.
“No democratic norm imposes any obligation on the ruling Party to intervene to solve the internal crisis or failure of leadership of opposition parties. The utter dysfunction and chaos in major opposition parties speak to their incapacity to govern themselves much less govern Nigeria,” Morka stated.
The APC noted that while democracy is not perfect, it is still the best option for the country. The party said the Tinubu administration is working to ensure that democracy brings progress, economic stability, and safety to all Nigerians.
According to the statement, democracy allows citizens to freely choose their leaders and protects the rule of law and civil freedoms better than other systems of governance. It also said that Nigerians made sacrifices in the past to end oppression and dictatorship so the country could enjoy a better future under democratic rule.
“Fortuitously, today, our country is led by one of democracy’s finest, fearless and resilient champions, President Bola Tinubu, a visionary leader and bold reformer. Under his watch, our country has finally risen to its feet to tackle deep-seated structural challenges and barriers to national growth and development,” the APC said.
