Osimhen Breaks Turkish Goal Record as Galatasaray Ends Six-Year Cup Drought

Victor Osimhen scored two goals on Wednesday night, helping Galatasaray secure the Turkish Cup for the first time in six years with a commanding 3-0 win over Trabzonspor. The Nigerian forward also made history by becoming the highest-scoring foreign player in a single Turkish football season.

Heading into the final, Osimhen had already scored 33 goals in all competitions. To break the long-standing record set by Brazil’s Mario Jardel, he needed just two more. He managed that in style, finding the net in the 46th and 63rd minutes to take his season tally to 35 goals — a new benchmark for foreign players in Turkish football.

Baris Yilmaz got the night started early for Galatasaray, scoring in just the fifth minute. Yunus Akgun provided the assist with a smart through-ball that split Trabzonspor’s defense. That early goal set the tone, but Osimhen quickly became the star of the show after halftime.

His first goal came right after the break — a powerful shot from the edge of the area that flew low into the bottom right corner. Seventeen minutes later, he struck again, this time curling the ball into the top corner after a quick turn inside the box.

With his two goals, Osimhen overtook Mario Jardel’s record from the 2000/01 season. He has now scored 35 goals in just 38 appearances for the club this season. The striker also moved higher on Galatasaray’s all-time foreign scorers list. Only seven other international players have scored more for the club, with Romania’s Gheorghe Hagi still leading with 72 goals.

Galatasaray now has its 19th Turkish Cup title — more than any other team in the country. The club also has a chance to win the league title on Sunday when they face Kayserispor. A victory would give them their 25th league crown and complete a domestic double, something they haven’t achieved since the 1998–99 season.
