Several prominent figures visited the Lekki residence of the late Afenifere leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, on Sunday to offer their condolences. Adebanjo, a respected statesman and advocate for justice, passed away at the age of 96 on Friday.
Among those who visited were former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, and the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye.
They were joined by other well-known individuals, including former Ogun State Governor Gbenga Daniel, Labour Party’s Lagos governorship candidate Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, and human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi.
Rhodes-Vivour, in a post on X.com, noted that the visit was a way to honor the late leader and show support for his grieving family. He wrote, “Earlier today, we joined the Adebanjo family in thanksgiving and prayers for God’s comfort and strength for the family.” He also described Adebanjo as a man who upheld the values of equity, justice, and true federalism throughout his lifetime.
Peter Obi also reflected on Adebanjo’s legacy, calling his death a significant loss to the country. He noted that Adebanjo was a strong advocate for a united and progressive Nigeria.
Obi recalled how the late leader supported his presidential bid, saying, “I remain deeply grateful for his support during my presidential campaign. His endorsement was not merely a political gesture but a testament to his belief in the ideals of equity and inclusiveness.”
Adebanjo was widely regarded as a principled leader who dedicated his life to speaking out on national issues and advocating for good governance. His impact on Nigerian politics and society remains undeniable, and his passing has left a void in the political landscape.
