Osun LG Crisis: Slain Council Boss, Remi Abass, Laid to Rest

The late chairman of Irewole Local Government in Osun State, Remi Abass, has been buried in his hometown, Ikire, amidst an outpouring of grief. Residents, family members, and political associates gathered to pay their last respects, with many unable to hold back their emotions.

Abass was tragically killed on Monday during a violent clash between supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over control of local government council secretariats in the state. The conflict, which erupted in Ikire, resulted in chaos, leaving the community in shock.

During the burial, mourners expressed their sorrow over Abass’s untimely death, noting his contributions to the development of Irewole. Many residents described him as a leader who was dedicated to the progress of his people.

In response to the tragedy, the APC in Osun State has advised its members and supporters to stay away from council secretariats as a mark of respect for Abass and other victims of the violence. The party’s chairman, Tajudeen Lawal, in a statement released by the Director of Publicity, Kola Olabisi, urged security agencies to intensify their efforts in bringing Abass’s killers to justice.

The statement reads partly, “The untimely and sudden killing of the peace-loving and consummate politician was inhuman, wicked and callous.

“As a party, we direct the other chairmen and their councillors to stay off their respective council secretariat as a sign of respect for their fallen colleagues until further notice. We assure you that the late Abass would not be killed in vain.”

Lawal also noted that all local government chairmen in the state have acted in line with the recent Court of Appeal judgment that reinstated them.
