Oyo Government Pays N60 Million Monthly to Settle Pension Arrears

The Oyo State Government has committed to paying N60 million every month to address the pension arrears of its retired civil servants. The move aims to clear the outstanding dues and ensure that pensioners are financially supported.

Noted by the State Chairman of the Pension Board, Tunji Adekunle, this announcement was made public in a statement on Thursday, shared with the press by the state’s Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade. According to Adekunle, as of April 2025, a total of 22,212 pensioners are currently listed on the payroll of the state’s Pension Board.

“The payment of N60 million monthly to pensioners is a key part of our strategy to address the backlog of pension payments,” Adekunle said. He also explained that since Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration took office, efforts have been made to ensure that pension payments are consistently disbursed before the 25th of each month, in line with regular salary payments for active workers.

Adekunle highlighted that new pensioners are added to the state’s payroll each month, further supporting the growing number of retirees. In fact, in the first four months of this year alone, the board has enrolled 142 pensioners in January, 175 in February, 171 in March, and 143 in April.

The Permanent Secretary of the state’s Pension Board, Hammed Bello, also praised Governor Makinde’s unwavering commitment to supporting retirees. Bello commented that the steady and timely payments have not only eased the financial strain on pensioners but have also helped restore their trust in the state’s administration.

“The consistent payment of pensions has been a great relief for many pensioners, and it strengthens the confidence they have in the government’s leadership,” Bello remarked.
