The Oyo State Government has approved a ₦4.5 billion relief package for victims and survivors of the Bodija explosion, a tragic incident that rocked the Bodija area of Ibadan on January 16, 2024. The decision was made during a recent meeting of the State Executive Council held at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan.
Speaking after the session, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, noted that this fresh financial support comes in addition to the ₦200 million already spent by the state. That earlier amount covered hospital bills, temporary accommodation, meals, and security services rendered immediately after the explosion.
Prince Oyelade also noted that the Council has agreed to revoke the land titles of two properties located off Adeyi Avenue, the site of the explosion. The land will be used to build a permanent memorial to honor the lives lost and the families affected by the disaster. This move follows the recommendations of a 10-member committee set up by the state government to oversee recovery efforts and support for victims.
In the same meeting, Council members expressed concern over the spread of misleading information by individuals claiming to speak for Bodija residents. They described these actions as deceptive and damaging to the state’s ongoing efforts to handle the aftermath responsibly. The Council affirmed its commitment to fairness and justice, urging the public to be patient while the government continues its recovery plan.
It was also revealed that some of the explosion victims are currently engaged in family-related property disputes. The government’s committee is actively involved in resolving these conflicts to ensure smooth disbursement of the funds.
Properties near the main explosion site, referred to as “ground zero,” will be returned to their rightful owners. These homeowners will be allowed to begin rebuilding under the guidance of structural engineers hired by the government to ensure safety standards are met.
On the legal front, the Commissioner said the Ministry of Justice is pressing forward with the prosecution of suspects already in custody. Authorities are also working to track down other individuals connected to the explosion who are still at large.
During the Council session, the Governor addressed ongoing rumors about cabinet changes. He asked citizens to disregard such claims, noting that any reshuffling is meant to bring renewed energy and focus to government operations, not to remove any official without cause.
“The Governor said he does not plan to drop any member of his Cabinet except anyone who is found to be distracted,” said Oyelade. He added that the administration remains committed to serving the people with the same dedication shown since 2019, as the Governor looks to conclude his term in 2027 with strong momentum.
