The Oyo/Osun Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) collected over N7.8 billion in revenue and seized contraband goods valued at N202 million in January 2025. The Customs Area Controller, Dr. Ben Oramalugo, revealed this information during a press briefing in Ibadan on Friday.
While presenting the Command’s performance report for 2024 and January 2025, Oramalugo noted that the revenue collection was achieved despite economic challenges and the implementation of various government fiscal policies.
He also detailed some of the contraband items intercepted, which included 170 bags of 50kg foreign rice, 1,667 used tyres, 32 bales of used clothes, two sacks of second-hand shoes, and 40 kegs of 25-litre Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).
Speaking on the Command’s overall revenue performance, Oramalugo noted that in 2024, the Command generated N82.2 billion for the federal government, representing a 15.3% increase from the N71.2 billion collected in 2023.
“The total revenue received in 2024 is the largest since the inception of the Command,” he said.
In addition to revenue collection, Oramalugo said the Command intensified its anti-smuggling operations, making significant seizures that helped protect the local economy and national security. He noted that the total value of seized goods in 2024 stood at N5.3 billion, a substantial increase compared to N451.4 million in 2023.
The Command’s enforcement efforts between December 20, 2024, and January 31, 2025, led to the confiscation of smuggled goods worth N202 million.
“As we carried out these anti-smuggling operations, we remained focused on protecting the interests of local manufacturers and industries.
“Our efforts ensured that cheaper, substandard, and harmful goods were kept out of our markets, thereby allowing local producers to thrive and ensuring the health and safety of citizens,” Oramalugo said.
He further noted that the Command’s efforts had significantly reduced the smuggling of fake drugs and other prohibited goods in the region.
