Pastor Sam Adeyemi, Senior Pastor of Daystar Christian Centre, has spoken out strongly against the growing indifference among Nigerian leaders toward the country’s underprivileged.
During an appearance on Channels Television’s “Sunrise Daily” on Thursday, May 22, 2025, the pastor noted that many of the country’s political elites are more focused on maintaining their grip on power than actually addressing the widespread suffering of ordinary Nigerians.
According to Adeyemi, a significant number of leaders have become consumed with the fear of losing political relevance. This, he said, has led them to hop from one political party to another, prioritizing personal security over public service.
“The fear of losing power drives many leaders to defect between political parties,” Adeyemi said.
He further noted that this behavior reflects how distant many politicians have grown from the harsh economic conditions and daily struggles experienced by everyday Nigerians. Adeyemi added that many in leadership now lack both empathy and compassion—qualities he said are essential for effective governance.
The pastor also drew attention to the role of political godfathers, who, he said, control who gains political office. This, according to him, undermines the democratic process and results in leaders who are loyal to their sponsors rather than to the people they are supposed to serve.
“This system breeds leaders who become corrupt and forget the people they are meant to serve,” he added.
Speaking on national unity, Adeyemi referenced former President Olusegun Obasanjo as someone who pushed against ethnic-based politics. He said this kind of leadership is what Nigeria needs to stay united and peaceful.
He also recalled a disturbing conversation with an expatriate who had heard rumors from within the Presidential Villa suggesting that certain groups were being blamed for the country’s challenges. Adeyemi warned that such narratives are harmful and risk further dividing the country.
In closing, Adeyemi urged Nigerian leaders to break free from political games and reconnect with the citizens they are meant to serve. He said real progress would only happen when leaders begin to prioritize the needs of the people over their own survival.
“The solution lies in leaders who truly care for the people and can make wise decisions for the country’s future,” he said.
