Wife of a former Nigerian president, Patience Jonathan, has successfully completed her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Psychology, Guidance and Counselling at Ignatius Ajuru University of Education in Rivers State. She received the degree during the institution’s 43rd Postgraduate Convocation Ceremony, held on Saturday, May 31, 2025.
The event was not only a moment of celebration but also a chance for the former First Lady to share a strong message with the public—especially Nigerian women and young people—about the value of continuous education. According to a statement issued by her media adviser, Chris Okeke, Patience Jonathan used her personal journey as an example of what can be achieved with determination and support.
Speaking at the convocation, she said, “I feel that no age is too late to achieve your academic dreams, whether you are young or old. If I can do it, you can also do it.”
She noted that learning should not stop after retirement or once a career begins. Education, in her view, is a way to keep the mind fresh and open to new ideas, no matter one’s age. She further encouraged Nigerian women and youths to focus on improving themselves through quality education.
“Let me use this opportunity to encourage Nigerian women and the youth to aspire to become the best of themselves through qualitative education,” she said.
Patience Jonathan dedicated the academic milestone to Nigerian women, adding that she would continue her work in supporting vulnerable groups. She noted that women, children, and youths in Nigeria still need voices that will push for their growth and protection, and she promised to stay committed to that cause.
She also took a moment to thank those who stood by her during her academic journey. “First of all, I am very grateful to the Almighty God who has made today a reality,” she said, noting that her faith played a major role in her success.
Jonathan gave special thanks to her husband, former President Goodluck Jonathan, for his help and advice throughout the program. She also appreciated her children and close friends for their love, support, and encouragement.
