PDP Crisis Not Just About Atiku, It’s a Clash of Egos — Gov Lawal

Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has shared his thoughts on the ongoing problems in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying that the issue is not only about the former presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

According to him, the crisis runs deeper and is caused by the pride and personal interests of many people within the party.

Speaking to journalists during a media chat held on Wednesday in Zamfara, Governor Lawal made it clear that Atiku should not be blamed alone for the internal struggles within the PDP.

“Everybody has their own issue; it’s not just about Atiku Abubakar; it’s beyond him,” he stated.

Governor Lawal explained that the root of the problem lies in personal differences and ego battles among PDP members. “It’s an internal problem within the PDP, and we are making a conscious effort. I think it’s about people’s egos — everybody, no exception,” he added.

When asked if he himself was part of the problem, he openly admitted his role, saying, “Yes.” This rare honesty from a sitting governor gave insight into the challenges the party faces in trying to rebuild unity.

Some PDP members have accused external forces, including President Bola Tinubu, of playing a role in weakening the party. But Lawal believes that the issues are more internal and that every member has a share of the blame, including himself.

The governor also spoke about Nigeria’s election system. Despite many complaints about unfair practices and government interference, he believes free and fair elections are still possible in the country.

He used his own 2023 victory in Zamfara as proof that a fair electoral process can still exist, even when powerful forces are involved.

“I will say yes because I experienced it in Zamfara State — with all the powerful people that can turn things around, with the might of the Federal Government and everything,” he said.

“Yes, there will still be a free and fair election. That was what made me elected as the governor of Zamfara State. I was the first elected PDP governor in Zamfara State. So, it was a free and fair election, and I believe it will happen. It’s a matter of time,” he noted.
