PDP Crisis: Party Deputies Urge Support for Damagum, Call for Unity

Elected deputies of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Working Committee (NWC) have issued a strong message to party members opposing the Acting National Chairman, Amb. Umar Damagum. The deputies noted that Damagum would remain in office until December 2025, urging critics to either accept his leadership or consider leaving the party.

Deputy National Youth Leader, Timothy Osadolor, made this statement during a media briefing in Abuja, where he was joined by four other deputies. Osadolor addressed the ongoing turmoil within the PDP, urging party leaders to set aside personal ambitions and focus on rebuilding the party.

Speaking candidly about the state of the PDP, Osadolor stated, “From 2013 till date, personal ambitions have driven us to heights of pure mischief and arrogant use of power. This has led to agreements not being kept and the ambiguities in our constitution being exploited by those in position, even through the courts. We are all complicit by being perpetrators, supporters, or silent.”

He noted that the party’s current challenges stem from a history of broken agreements, selfish interests, and internal conflicts. Osadolor called on members to stop assigning blame and instead work together to reposition the PDP for success. He emphasized that the infighting and public criticism of the party’s leadership must end immediately.

“Court distractions and media demarketing of the PDP must stop forthwith. You do not need to like the officers, but the party is more important,” Osadolor said. He also warned those unhappy with the party’s direction against undermining it from within, adding, “If you want to resign and go, be a proper opposition. Do not be here and going from TV to radio houses abusing the party.”

Osadolor pointed out that beyond dealing with the challenges posed by the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government, the PDP is also facing discontent among its members nationwide. He attributed this to issues such as distrust, lack of transparency, and self-serving interests among party leaders.

He further criticized unnamed PDP leaders for stirring confusion behind the scenes instead of working toward reconciliation. “This behavior is apparently self-serving on their part, as it is not in the interest of the PDP in any way,” Osadolor said, stressing that internal mechanisms for resolving disputes should be utilized.

Other deputies present at the briefing included Deputy National Publicity Secretary Ibrahim Abdullahi, Deputy National Financial Secretary Ndubisi Eneh, and National Deputy Organising Secretary Pascal Adigwe. Together, they called on party members to rally behind Damagum’s leadership and prioritize unity over personal grievances to restore the PDP’s standing as a formidable opposition party.
