PDP Governors Meet in Ibadan to Decide Anyanwu’s Future, Address Party Crises

Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have gathered in Ibadan, Oyo State, today, for a crucial meeting that could shape the party’s direction ahead of the 2027 general elections. The meeting, called by the PDP Governors’ Forum, is expected to tackle several pressing matters that have been troubling the party in recent months.

A major topic on the table is the recent Supreme Court decision regarding Senator Samuel Anyanwu’s position as the National Secretary of the party. The apex court had, on March 21, 2025, overturned lower court rulings that temporarily installed Sunday Udeh-Okoye in the role. While the party had earlier shown support for Udeh-Okoye, it has remained silent since the court reinstated Anyanwu, a politician believed to be closely aligned with the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

According to reports, the governors will not only decide how to respond to the court ruling but also weigh the political consequences of either maintaining or replacing Anyanwu, especially in light of party unity.

Another matter expected to be discussed in detail is the ongoing crisis in Rivers State, where Governor Siminalayi Fubara is currently suspended from the party. Fubara’s suspension followed President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in the state, a move that further heightened tensions in the already volatile political environment.

Fubara, who serves as PDP Vice Chairman, has received support from some party members, while others appear divided. The situation in Rivers could have wider consequences for the PDP, especially in the South-South region, traditionally seen as a party stronghold.

The meeting will also touch on recent moves by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. Atiku has been actively promoting the idea of merging opposition parties to present a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027. The governors are expected to examine how such a merger might impact the PDP’s structure and influence.

In addition to these issues, the governors plan to talk about how best to rebuild the party from within. Discussions around internal peace, reconciliation among factions, and planning for the next round of elections are high on the agenda.
