PDP Lawmaker, Guber Candidate, Others Defect to Labour Party in Abia

The opposition camp in Abia State is getting smaller as several top political figures have crossed over to the Labour Party (LP), showing their support for Governor Alex Otti and his ongoing efforts to transform the state. The event, which took place at Isuikwuato High School, Otankpa, marked a major political shift in the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Among those who joined the LP were current member of the Abia State House of Assembly representing Isuikwuato constituency, Lucky Johnson; his predecessor, Chukwudi Ogele; 2023 Action Alliance governorship candidate, Onyekwere Akim Uche; former Commissioner for Sports, Henry Agbaeze; and a notable stakeholder, Emma Ibegbulam. They were joined by their numerous supporters, signaling a united move to back Governor Otti’s administration.

Speaking at the gathering, Governor Otti thanked the new party members for their bold decision and praised them for choosing what he described as “the path of light.” He said his administration would continue to bring meaningful development to all areas of the state.

Otti also spoke about his administration’s plan to solve the persistent power issue in Uturu and its surroundings. He said, “As part of the rehabilitation of Abia State University, I have approved that an independent power plant project be set up in Abia State University. The independent power plant project would generate not less than 10 megawatts of electricity.”

According to the governor, this power initiative will benefit both the university and the host community, Uturu. He explained that following the recent signing of the Abia State Electricity Law, the state can now establish its own power solutions without relying on federal approvals.

While responding to appeals from locals, Governor Otti promised that the Amibo-Acha road would be fixed, as it has been included in the state’s budget. He also mentioned that the Eziama–Ndundu Road project would soon begin.

During the event, Hon. Amobi Ogah, who represents Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency, praised the Governor for his infrastructure development and commitment to the people. He promised that the constituency would stand by the Governor as he leads the state forward.

Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, described Governor Otti as a visionary leader and encouraged continued public support to help him achieve even more and secure a second term.

In his remarks, Honourable Johnson noted, “Governor Otti had made Abians proud through his achievements.” He added that all political parties in Isuikwuato have now aligned with the Labour Party and predicted that the 2027 election would go in favour of the governor.

Others who spoke at the event included Attorney-General Ikechukwu Uwanna, Isuikwuato Mayor Chinedu Ekeke, and Assembly Commission Chairman Uche Maduako. They noted the governor’s achievements in areas like education, health, roads, and prompt payment of workers’ entitlements.

Dr. Onyinyechi Rufus-Obi of the Greater Ohafia Development Authority described Otti as diligent and thanked him for the power project aimed at improving the lives of the people in Uturu.

Also speaking, Mr. Ken Ahia (SAN), Chief Chidiebere Uguru, and Dr. Chidi Mba all voiced their support for the governor, saying that he had done more than past administrations and deserved a second term in office. They noted that Isuikwuato is fully behind him and will continue to support his development plans.
