The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is preparing to take legal action against Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, and other PDP members in Delta who recently defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The PDP’s Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, has been tasked with handling the legal proceedings as the party looks to challenge the defections in court. Acting National Chairman of the PDP, Amb Umar Damagum, spoke with journalists following the first National Working Committee (NWC) meeting of the year.
Damagum explained that the party is determined to regain control, noting that the officials in question were originally elected under the PDP banner.
The PDP also revealed that the leadership structure of the party in Delta State would undergo significant changes. Amb Damagum further disclosed that Emma Ogidi, the Caretaker Chairman for the South-South zone, has been instructed to assume leadership of the Delta PDP. Ogidi will be responsible for identifying new party leaders in the state, while the existing leadership under Chief Dan Orbih will be disregarded.
The defections occurred on April 23, 2025, when Governor Oborevwori, along with Senator Okowa and the entire PDP structure in Delta State, joined the APC. This move was seen as a dramatic shift in a state that had long been a stronghold of the PDP.
The political realignment in Delta is significant. It also saw the defection of the state’s Deputy Governor, Monday Onyeme, along with state commissioners, local government chairmen, and grassroots officials. This large-scale shift was reportedly influenced by the political changes brought about by the “Hurricane Tinubu,” referring to President Bola Tinubu’s growing influence.
