Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has pledged to assist in meeting the bail conditions set for prominent human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi. This development comes after Farotimi was granted bail by an Ekiti Magistrate Court in connection with a defamation case involving legal luminary Afe Babalola.
The bail terms include a N30 million bond, the provision of two sureties (one of whom must own a property), the surrender of Farotimi’s passport, and an agreement to refrain from speaking to the media.
Tanko Yunusa, a former spokesperson for Obi’s presidential campaign, made the announcement via his X account on Friday. Yunusa highlighted Obi’s unwavering commitment to the principles of law and order, emphasizing that Obi wants the matter resolved fairly and with respect for the legal process.
“I consulted His Excellency, Peter Obi, as the leader of the Obidient Movement. As a respecter of rule of law, due process, and order, he offered to take Dele Farotimi on the bail conditions,” Yunusa shared.
Yunusa also conveyed Obi’s gratitude to everyone involved in the case, adding, “His concern is that the situation be resolved in the best interest of all parties and our legal system. He extended his sincere appreciation to all concerned.”
