Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has expressed deep sadness over the passing of former Nigerian goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, describing it as a painful loss to Lagos and the entire country.
Sanwo-Olu noted that Rufai played a significant role in the history of Nigerian football, representing the country with passion and winning important titles that brought respect from the international community.
The late goalkeeper was a vital part of the Super Eagles during the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cup tournaments, where he stood as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper. He also played a major part in Nigeria’s victory at the 1994 African Cup of Nations in Tunisia.
“On behalf of Lagos State, I extend heartfelt condolences to Nigerians and Lagosians who remember him from Stationery Stores Football Club,” Sanwo-Olu said.
The Governor described Rufai as not only a sportsman but also a true ambassador of Lagos and Nigeria. His legacy, according to Sanwo-Olu, will not be forgotten. “I pray God grants the family, friends and fans the strength to bear this loss. May his soul rest in perfect peace,” he added.
