The Port Harcourt Refinery has officially commenced operations, with an estimated 200 trucks poised to transport petroleum products daily. This announcement was confirmed by Sunday Dare, a presidential spokesperson, via a statement on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday.
The refinery’s operational kick-off marks a major milestone in the government’s efforts to boost local refining capacity and reduce reliance on imported fuel. The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) had earlier declared that crude oil processing at the government-owned refinery has begun, signaling a renewed push to revitalize the nation’s refining infrastructure.
In his statement, Dare highlighted the significance of the event, stating, “200 trucks are expected to load products daily from the refinery, renewing the hopes of Nigeria.” He elaborated on the refinery’s configuration, explaining that it consists of two units. “The Old Refinery comes on stream today with an installed production capacity of 60,000 barrels per day of crude oil,” he noted.
