The Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, has reacted to the passing of the state chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Very Rev Fr Dr Polycarp Lubo.
The late priest died early Sunday, June 15, 2025, at a hospital in Jos following a brief illness. His health reportedly worsened after an accident he suffered the previous week.
Rev Fr Lubo’s death was officially announced through a statement from the Catholic Archdiocese of Jos. The notice, signed by the Archdiocesan Chancellor, Daniel Gyang, confirmed the priest’s passing in the early hours of the day.
According to the statement, “On a sad note but with total submission to the will of God, we hereby announce the passing unto eternal glory of Very Rev Fr Dr Polycap Lubo, who passed on to eternal glory in the wee hours of the morning of Sunday 15th June 2025.”
The church extended its condolences to his family, the Plateau CAN chapter, fellow priests, parishioners of St William’s Parish in Zawan, and all members of the Jos Archdiocese. Fr Lubo had served as the Parish Priest and Dean of the Zawan Deanery before his death.
In his message of condolence, Governor Mutfwang described the death as “a monumental loss” not only to the church but to the state and the nation as a whole. He noted Fr Lubo’s unwavering devotion to his calling and to promoting peace within Plateau State.
“Fr Lubo laboured tirelessly in the Lord’s vineyard, nurturing his flock and directing countless souls toward the Kingdom of God,” the governor said. “His steadfast commitment to the quest for enduring peace and unity on the Plateau remains a testimony that will speak for generations.”
Governor Mutfwang also remembered Fr Lubo as a cheerful and deeply spiritual man. Quoting Apostle Paul, he added, “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.”
He noted that Fr Lubo’s life was filled with acts of selfless service, kindness, and bravery—qualities that inspired many far beyond his church role.
