Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has described the recent violent attacks in his state as genocidal in nature, suggesting that the attacks were not random but funded by unknown sponsors. He made these statements during an appearance on Channels Television’s programme, Politics Today, on Tuesday, April 8.
The attacks, which took place on March 28, 2025, left at least 52 people dead, including children. The victims were mostly from Bokkos and Bassa Local Government Areas, where armed assailants believed to be herders launched coordinated strikes on communities in the area. The aftermath of the attacks revealed massive destruction of property and widespread panic among residents.
Governor Mutfwang expressed his anger and sorrow over the killings, noting that the scale and precision of the attacks pointed to something more organized than just communal clashes. He said the violence had the hallmarks of a planned assault on the region.
The governor stated, “I can tell you in all honesty that I cannot find any explanation other than genocide sponsored by terrorists.
“The question is, who are the persons behind the organisers of this terrorism? This is what the security agencies must help us to unravel.
“We must come to the point where we know the sponsors because it is not just the work of ordinary people.
“This is being sponsored from somewhere, and I am sure that in the coming days, the security agencies will work together, not at cross-purposes but in unison, to be able to bring out the requisite intelligence that will help us to put this matter behind us.”
