The Nigerian Police Force’s Zone 5 Headquarters has announced the arrest of two individuals believed to be involved in the illegal trade of firearms in Edo State. This significant development was revealed by the Zonal Police Public Relations Officer (ZPPRO), DSP Tijani Momoh, on Saturday.
The arrests were made under the directive of Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) of Police Arungwa Nwazue, who oversees Edo and Delta zones. His directive was aimed at intensifying efforts to rid the region of illegal arms, especially as the gubernatorial election in Edo State draws near.
According to DSP Momoh, the arrest took place early on Friday morning at around 5:00 a.m. A team from the Zonal Intelligence Response Squad, led by ASP Mohammed Usman, carried out a raid in the Ileh community in Ekpoma, located in Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State. The operation, which was based on reliable intelligence, resulted in the capture of the two suspected gunrunners.
The raid also led to the recovery of a significant number of weapons, including 30 locally made guns. These consisted of 23 single-barrel and seven double-barrel guns, along with one English-manufactured double-barrel gun. Additionally, the police seized 13 live cartridges, a large toolbox, and a drill machine believed to have been used in crafting the illegal firearms.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects had been involved in supplying and renting firearms to criminals, including kidnappers, armed robbers, and cultists. These weapons have reportedly been used to carry out various crimes in Edo and surrounding areas.
“The AIG has ordered a comprehensive and thorough investigation into the case, after which the suspects will be arraigned in court for prosecution,” said DSP Momoh.
