The Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JED) has stated that the Mobile Police Barracks in Makurdi will remain without electricity supply until a large outstanding bill is paid.
In a press release issued on Sunday, the company noted that the disconnection followed a violent incident involving officers of the Nigerian Mobile Police Force. According to JED, some officers attacked their office in Makurdi after electricity to the barracks was cut due to an unpaid debt of N112,420,658.65.
The Head of Corporate Services, Friday Elijah, explained in the statement that the officers stormed the JED Business Unit in Makurdi in an aggressive manner. He said the security guard on duty, Mr. Hassan Ademu, was severely assaulted.
“The police men stormed the office in a commando style and descended on the security guard on duty – Mr Hassan Ademu. He was beaten to a stupor and had his head broken.”
Elijah noted that the company strongly condemned the incident and found the conduct of the officers unacceptable. He said the physical attack was linked directly to the disconnection of the barracks due to the unpaid electricity bill.
He added that JED’s management was deeply concerned about the safety of its staff and was planning to send an official complaint to the Inspector-General of Police and the Benue State Commissioner of Police regarding the assault.
“The management of JED PLC has announced plans to write a protest letter to the Inspector-General of Police and the Commissioner of Police, Benue State Command, over the attack on its staff,” the statement read in parts.
Elijah further noted that unless the full amount is paid, the disconnection would not be reversed.
“The management has also warned that the mobile barracks will remain disconnected until the outstanding debt is settled,” he added.
