Police Detain Thug Who Attacked Female Driver in Viral Video

Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested a man identified as Friday Onu for allegedly attacking a female commercial driver, Yetunde Amole, on the Lekki-Epe Expressway. The incident, which occurred on Monday, April 7, 2025, near the Oriental Hotel, was captured in a video that quickly spread across social media platforms.

The police stated that Onu was caught in the act of trying to steal the car battery from Amole’s vehicle. When she confronted him, he reportedly turned violent and began to assault her.

The command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, shared a detailed update on the matter through an official statement on Wednesday. He noted that Amole’s courage to intervene during the attempted theft led to the confrontation, during which she suffered a physical assault from the suspect.

“The Lagos State Police Command is aware of a viral video circulating on social media, depicting the assault of one Yetunde Amole by a suspected thug near the Oriental Hotel area in Lagos,” the statement reads. “The command condemns this act in the strongest terms and wishes to update the public on the actions already taken.”

Officers from the Maroko Division were quick to respond and arrested Onu shortly after the incident. However, he reportedly became ill while in custody and was transferred to Falomo Police Hospital, where he is currently receiving medical attention. Authorities have confirmed that once he is deemed fit by police medical staff, he will face charges in court.

Hundeyin noted that the command remains committed to the safety of all residents and urged the public to cooperate with law enforcement. “We also commend Ms. Amole for her bravery and assure her and all victims of crime that their cases will be thoroughly pursued to ensure justice is served in all cases,” he added.

On Tuesday, Amole appeared in a separate video, visibly injured and in tears, recounting the experience. She explained that the suspect entered her vehicle pretending to be a passenger heading toward the Nigerian Law School. However, she became suspicious when she saw him through her rear-view mirror attempting to tamper with her car battery.

When she confronted him, Amole said the situation turned violent. “He beat me, tore my clothes, and dragged me in public,” she said in the emotional video.
