The Nigerian Police Force has achieved a significant breakthrough in the investigation of the murder of Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Jega.
A prime suspect, identified as Tunde Adewunmi, has been apprehended after months of intense investigation. The arrest was confirmed in a statement issued on Monday by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi.
According to the statement, Adewunmi is a suspected member of a notorious robbery syndicate that has been linked to several high-profile crimes in the region.
One of their most audacious acts was the fatal ambush that led to the death of CSP Jega last November. The officer was responding to a distress call about an armed robbery in the Ikoyi area when he was tragically killed.
“This arrest is a significant breakthrough in our ongoing investigation,” the police statement read. “The suspect has been on our radar for quite some time, and we are confident that this arrest will lead to further critical information about the syndicate’s operations.”
Intelligence reports led police to a safe house on the outskirts of the city, where Adewunmi was apprehended. During the operation, officers recovered firearms and stolen items believed to be linked to the gang’s activities.
“This is a major step in bringing justice to CSP Jega and his family,” said the police spokesperson. “We are committed to dismantling this dangerous syndicate and ensuring that all those involved are brought to book.”
The suspect now faces charges of armed robbery and murder. Authorities have assured the public that further investigations are underway to identify and apprehend other members of the syndicate.
CSP Jega’s murder sent shockwaves through the local community, leaving many grieving the loss of a dedicated officer known for his commitment to justice.
His family has expressed gratitude to the police for their efforts. “We are deeply grateful to the police for their tireless work in bringing the perpetrators to justice. Our family continues to mourn the loss of a beloved husband, father, and colleague,” they stated.
