A police officer from the Ekiti State Police Command accidentally discharged his firearm, resulting in the death of an innocent woman.
The tragic event took place near the Okela Police Station, where the victim had reportedly gone to visit her husband, who was in custody at the station.
Witnesses revealed that the woman was standing in front of a salon located across from the police station when the unfortunate shooting occurred.
It was reported that the officer’s rifle discharged unexpectedly, striking the woman. Bystanders quickly rushed her to a nearby hospital, but despite their efforts, she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Speaking about the incident, the Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, AIG Akinwale Adeniran, confirmed the occurrence and emphasized that immediate steps were taken to address the situation.
“The officer involved has been disarmed and is currently detained for questioning, in strict adherence to the police act,” he stated.
