The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has launched an investigation into an incident involving a lawmaker from Abia State, Hon. Alexander Ikwechegh, and a dispatch rider.
This case has drawn public attention and criticism following claims that the lawmaker threatened the rider for requesting payment for services rendered.
The incident reportedly took place on October 27, 2024, in Abuja’s Maitama district.
According to an official statement titled “Nigeria Police Reacts to the Humiliation of Dispatch Rider by Abia State House of Reps Member,” the FCT Police confirmed they are examining the case after a formal complaint was made by the dispatch rider, Mr. Stephen Abuwatseya.
Following the report, the police stated, “The FCT Command is actively handling the case following Mr. Abuwatseya’s official report at the Maitama Divisional Headquarters.”
The controversy erupted when a video of the encounter began circulating online, sparking intense reactions from the public. In the video, Hon. Ikwechegh is allegedly seen confronting Abuwatseya and refusing to pay him for his delivery service.
Ikwechegh purportedly made intimidating remarks, asking the dispatch rider, “Do you know where you are? Do you know who I am?” In response, Abuwatseya calmly insisted on his payment, saying, “I don’t want to know, just pay me and let me go.”
As the exchange escalated, Abuwatseya continued to assert his right to payment, reiterating, “I did a job for you, and you have to pay me, sir.”
Reports suggest that Ikwechegh reacted negatively to these demands, allegedly calling the rider “very, very stupid” and even threatening, “I can make this man disappear in the whole of Nigeria and nothing would happen.”
The video has sparked significant public outrage, with many Nigerians condemning what they perceive as an abuse of power.
Human rights advocates have also stepped in, urging the police to carry out a thorough investigation and ensure justice is served. These groups emphasize the importance of holding public officials accountable and preventing the misuse of authority.
