The Nigeria Police Force has filed charges against activist Omoyele Sowore over social media comments deemed to incite unrest. The police claim that Sowore’s statements, particularly those referring to Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun as “illegal,” could lead to disorder.
Sowore, known for his activism and outspoken stance on government matters, will face three charges under the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) Act of 2015, which was amended in 2024. The charges, filed in case number FCH/ABJ/23/25, accuse him of spreading false information and making statements intended to provoke unrest.
One of the posts in question states, “The illegal IG of Nigeria Police Force, Kayode Egbetokun, will make the next #ENDSARS inevitable! He is working tirelessly towards it. Just a matter of time. #EgbetekunMustGo #Revolution.” The police argue that such remarks could stir public agitation and threaten national stability.
According to the charge sheet, Sowore is accused of intentionally sending messages via his verified social media account that could lead to a breakdown of law and order. The police further note that his comments were aimed at damaging the reputation of the IGP and the force as a whole.
Sowore’s arraignment is scheduled to take place before Justice Liman at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday. His legal team will be led by Marshall Abubakar, who is expected to challenge the charges.
The activist was arrested on Monday after allegedly refusing to comply with bail conditions set by the police. Authorities claim he obstructed public officers and engaged in cyberstalking.
