Police Uncover Gun Running Ring, Arrest 47-Year-Old Native Doctor in Delta

Operatives of the Delta State Police Command have arrested a 47-year-old native doctor, Okonji Chimeze, for alleged involvement in illegal arms trading.

According to a statement released on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the suspect was picked up at his home in Umuehe Quarters, Ibusa, Oshimili North Local Government Area. The arrest was carried out by the Special Anti-Kidnapping and Cybercrime Squad at about 6:30 a.m. on June 14, 2025, following a tip-off received by the authorities.

Edafe noted that officers executed a search warrant at the residence of the native doctor and found two automatic pump-action rifles along with a cutlass. The weapons were carefully hidden in the ceiling of one of the rooms, suggesting an attempt to keep them out of sight. “The suspect and the recovered items are in custody while the investigation continues,” Edafe said.

The police believe the arrest could be connected to a wider network of illegal arms distribution in the area. Investigators are currently trying to determine how long the suspect has been in the business and who else may be involved in supplying or purchasing the weapons.

In another operation, which took place on June 18, members of the Eagle-Net Surveillance Team carried out a routine search at the Otokutu Bridge in Ughelli North Local Government Area. During the stop-and-search exercise, they intercepted a black Toyota Corolla with two male occupants: Telvin Richmond, aged 27, and 26-year-old Frank Obiorah.

A careful search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a locally made cut-to-size gun, two hand bands marked with “NBM”, a wooden pistol, and a battle axe. These items were found hidden within the door compartment of the car.

Police investigations have revealed that the two young men are suspected to be part of the Aiye Confraternity. SP Edafe noted that the firearm in their possession had been bought in 2024 for ₦87,000 from another suspect who is currently on the run.
