The Nigeria Police Force has advised the group known as the “Take It Back Movement” to call off its planned nationwide protest set for Monday, April 7, 2025. The police say the timing of the protest is not only poorly planned but also suspicious, given that the same date has been declared as National Police Day by the Federal Government.
In a statement made public by the Force Public Relations Officer, Assistant Commissioner of Police Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police expressed serious concerns over the group’s decision to hold demonstrations on a day dedicated to celebrating law enforcement officers across the country. The National Police Day is meant to recognize the hard work, courage, and sacrifices made by members of the Nigeria Police Force in maintaining peace and security.
According to the statement, the protest is scheduled to take place in several locations, including major cities and particularly the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), where key national events will be held. Police authorities noted that the protest, if allowed to proceed, could disrupt the official celebrations and cast a negative light on the country in the eyes of international guests expected at the event.
Among those expected to attend the Police Day celebration are foreign Inspectors-General of Police, government officials, and diplomatic representatives. The event aims to showcase the efforts and progress of the Nigeria Police in handling national security challenges.
“The rationale behind staging a nationwide protest on the same day is questionable and perceived to be a deliberate attempt to malign the image of the Nigeria Police,” the official statement read.
While acknowledging that every citizen has the constitutional right to assemble and speak freely, the police questioned why the protest had to be scheduled for a day meant for national appreciation of the police force. They urged the organizers to explore peaceful dialogue instead of choosing a confrontational approach.
The police further noted that they remain committed to protecting the rights of all Nigerians but will also not stand by if actions are taken that could create instability or discredit a national institution.
