The family of renowned gospel singer and ordained pastor, Bolaji Olarewaju, popularly called Big Bolaji or “Big B,” has announced his death. He passed away on Saturday, April 19, 2025, after what was described as a short illness.
In a public statement, his family shared their grief and confirmed his passing. Big Bolaji was known not just for his music, but also for his strong presence in the church and his vibrant personality. He was 50 years old.
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Bolaji Olarewaju, affectionately known as ‘Big B,’ a cherished father, husband, brother, and an esteemed figure in both the church community, an ordained Pastor in the RCCG and a giant in the music industry and our community,” the statement read.
Big Bolaji’s family said his life was one of service, love, and dedication—both to his faith and to others. Many who knew him or followed his music have taken to social media to share their condolences and memories. His songs, filled with inspiration and joy, made a lasting mark on gospel music lovers across Nigeria and beyond.
According to the family, “Bolaji’s life was a testament to his passion for music, his unwavering faith, and his dedication to uplifting those around him. His legacy is not only in the melodies he created but in the lives he touched and the unquantifiable joy he spread.”
Though originally from Osun State, Big Bolaji spent most of his life in Ibadan, Oyo State, where he grew up and also held his popular gospel concert series, “Turn It Up With Big Bolaji.” The yearly concert became a major event in Ibadan’s gospel scene, attracting crowds from various parts of the country.
Aside from music, he was a certified estate surveyor and an ordained pastor in the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), where he also ministered and impacted lives.
The family said they are taking comfort in their faith during this time of loss and added: “As we navigate through this time of loss, we kindly request privacy to mourn as a family. We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of love and support we have received and ask that you continue to keep us in your prayers.”
