Premier League to Introduce Semi-Automated Offside Technology from April 12

The Premier League will start using semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) in matches beginning April 12. This marks a significant step towards improving accuracy in offside decisions.

The technology was first introduced in English football during the FA Cup fifth-round matches in March, where it was tested in seven of the eight fixtures. After further non-live testing in the Premier League, officials have now approved its use in top-flight games.

SAOT is designed to make offside calls more precise by automating key parts of the decision-making process. It utilizes virtual offside lines and optical player tracking, which will be visible to fans both in stadiums and on television broadcasts. This system ensures that decisions are more consistent and faster than traditional VAR checks.

The process involves tracking player movements using 30 cameras placed around the stadium. When an offside situation arises, the technology generates a virtual offside line, which is then reviewed by VAR officials to confirm its accuracy before the final decision is communicated to the referee. The system is expected to reduce delays and improve the overall flow of the game.

SAOT has already been used at the highest levels of football, including the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, as well as in top European leagues such as Serie A, La Liga, and the UEFA Champions League.

A Premier League statement noted:

“Semi-automated offside technology automates key elements of the offside decision-making process to support the video assistant referee (VAR).”

“It provides more efficient placement of the virtual offside line, using optical player tracking, and generates virtual graphics to ensure an enhanced in-stadium and broadcast experience for fans.”

“The technology maintains the integrity of the process while enhancing the speed, efficiency, and consistency of offside decision-making.”

The Premier League has worked alongside Professional Game Match Officials Ltd and Genius Sports to implement the system. Its first use in a league match will be when Manchester City faces Crystal Palace in the early kick-off on April 12. Other fixtures on the same day include Arsenal’s home match against Brentford.
