The Presidency has issued an apology after mistakenly placing two well-known Nigerians, Pa Reuben Fasoranti and Dr. Edwin Madunagu, in the posthumous category of national honours during President Bola Tinubu’s Democracy Day address.
The confusion began during the President’s speech at the National Assembly on June 12, 2025. While recognising several Nigerians for their contributions to the country’s democratic journey, the names of Fasoranti and Madunagu appeared in the list meant to honour those who have passed away.
Both Fasoranti and Madunagu are still alive, and news of the error quickly spread online and across the media, leading to criticism and concern. The incident raised questions about the accuracy of official records and how such a sensitive mistake could be made during a major national event.
A statement was later issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy. He admitted the error and referred to it as an “oversight.” He also assured the public that steps were being taken to correct the mistake.
“Under the Posthumous Award category, the names of Pa Reuben Fasoranti, the Afenifere leader, and Dr. Edwin Madunagu were incorrectly included. Both distinguished individuals are very much alive and, therefore, should not have appeared in the posthumous category,” Onanuga said.
He also noted that the necessary changes would be made across all digital platforms managed by the State House. “We sincerely regret this oversight. We shall make the necessary corrections across all State House digital platforms,” the statement added.
