President Bola Ahmed Tinubu departed Abuja on Sunday, November 17, for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to attend the 19th G20 Leaders’ Summit. The two-day meeting, hosted by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, will run from Monday, November 18, to Tuesday, November 19.
According to a statement released by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the Nigerian leader was invited by Brazil’s president, who currently holds the presidency of the influential group of 20 major economies.
The statement, titled “President Tinubu to participate in G20 leaders summit in Brazil,” highlights the importance of the gathering, which will also include the African Union, the European Union, and leading multilateral financial institutions.
The summit’s theme, “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet,” will guide discussions on critical global issues such as hunger and poverty eradication, reforms of international governance systems, and sustainable development. Energy transition will also be a major focus of the talks.
As part of his agenda, President Tinubu is expected to engage in bilateral meetings to promote Nigeria’s socio-economic reforms and international partnerships. This comes as Nigeria continues to advocate for the reform of global institutions and its aspiration for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.
Accompanying Tinubu are key officials, including Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar, Minister of Livestock Development Idi Maiha, Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security Dr. Aliyu Abdullahi, and other senior figures.
This visit marks Tinubu’s first trip to Brazil since assuming office. It is also his 31st international journey in 17 months, spanning 16 countries and accumulating over 125 days abroad. His frequent foreign engagements underline Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen global ties and attract economic opportunities.
