President Tinubu Orders Urgent Response as Maiduguri Faces “Worst Flood in Decades”

President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep concern over the severe flooding that has affected Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, describing the disaster as the worst flood in recent decades.

The flood, caused by the overflow of the Alau Dam, has displaced thousands of residents and damaged key infrastructure, including the Post Office and the Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

In a statement released on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu extended his heartfelt condolences to the affected families and the people of Borno State.

He particularly sympathized with those who have lost loved ones and property due to the disaster. The President emphasized the federal government’s commitment to supporting the state during this challenging time.

President Tinubu has directed all relevant agencies, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), to take immediate action to assist the victims of the flood.

He also assured Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum of the federal government’s readiness to mobilize resources to aid in the response and recovery efforts.

The statement reads; “President Bola Tinubu expresses deep concern about the flooding in parts of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.

“The worst flood in recent decades has displaced thousands of residents and affected facilities such as the Post office and the Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

“President Tinubu extends his heartfelt condolences to the government and people of the State, especially to the families that have lost their means of livelihood due to the disaster triggered by the overflow of the Alau Dam.

“While relevant authorities are still assessing the damage wrought by the flood, the President calls for the immediate evacuation of people from affected areas.

“President Tinubu assures Governor Babagana Umara Zulum that the Federal Government is ready to collaborate to address the immediate humanitarian needs of the affected people.

“He orders the National Emergency Management Agency to assist the flood victims.

“The President remains committed to mobilising federal resources to support the state during this difficult time.” the statement reads.
