A Prominent Nigerian political figure is under scrutiny following a chaotic scene at Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed Airport, after reportedly missing a scheduled flight and reacting with violence, according to a statement released by Air Peace.
The incident occurred early Wednesday morning around 6:10 a.m. at Terminal 1 (Zulu Hall). The airline reported that the politician arrived after boarding had closed for Flight P47120 to Abuja, which was scheduled to take off at 6:30 a.m. Despite strict adherence to aviation schedules, the latecomer is said to have responded angrily after learning he would not be allowed to board.
In a statement signed by Air Peace spokesperson Osifo-Whiskey Efe, the airline alleged that the politician “physically assaulted airline personnel” and then took matters into his own hands by sealing the terminal’s main entrance. He allegedly blocked other travelers from entering the building, bringing activities at the terminal to a halt.
Air Peace noted that the disruption affected other passengers and caused operational setbacks. Staff on duty and customers were caught in the middle of the tension, leading to significant delays.
To manage the situation, the airline said it quickly implemented an emergency plan. Affected passengers were rerouted through an alternate terminal to avoid further inconvenience. The airline added that this move helped minimize delays and kept scheduled flights on track.
“We are appalled by this display of aggression and disregard for aviation procedures,” the airline stated.
The statement went on to stress that Air Peace has a zero-tolerance policy toward violence, and no individual—no matter how influential—has the right to interfere with airport operations or pose a threat to the safety and comfort of others.
The airline also reminded travelers of the importance of arriving on time for flights and cooperating with staff. “Our commitment is to deliver timely and safe air travel, and that commitment includes upholding discipline, integrity, and due process,” the statement noted.
