The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the appointment of six new Deputy Inspectors General of Police (DIGs) following the retirement of four senior officers. The commission also promoted Enugu State Commissioner of Police (CP), Kanayo Uzuegbu, to the rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) and appointed new CPs for Enugu and Oyo State Commands.
The newly appointed DIGs are Sadiq Idiris Abubakar, Commandant of the Police Academy, Wudil, Kano; Benjamin Nebolisa Okolo, former AIG of Zone 16, Yenagoa; and Williams Adebowale, Commandant of the Police Staff College, Jos. Others include Bzigu Yakubu Kwazi Bali, AIG FCID, Annex Enugu; Idegwu Basil Ukuoma, AIG Zone 14, Katsina; and Adebola Ayinde Hamzat, AIG Zone 16, Yenagoa.
Their appointments come after the retirement of DIG Jonathan Towuru, DIG Bala Viroma, DIG Dasuki Galandachi, DIG Ali Ari Muhammed, DIG Banji Lawal, and DIG Suleiman Yusuf.
A statement by PSC Spokesman Ikechukwu Ani noted that DIG Okolo previously served as AIG in the Information Communication Technology Department at Force Headquarters, Abuja. In addition to these changes, CP Ademola Johnson has been appointed as the new Commissioner of Police for Oyo State. He was formerly the Principal Staff Officer to the Inspector-General of Police and had served as Deputy Commissioner of Police in Delta State. Meanwhile, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa has been named CP for Enugu State, taking over from the newly promoted AIG Kanayo Uzuegbu. CP Giwa previously served as DCP Operations in Kaduna and Imo States, among other key roles.
The PSC also approved the promotion of eight Chief Superintendents of Police (CSPs) to Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs). Those promoted include Abdullahi Kamba Usman, Sani Abdu, Ifeanyi Owo, Vincent Orole, Elisha Atikinkpan, Margaret Okonkwo, Alhasan Aliyu Guga, and Imo Owinizi Ezekiel.
The promotions were based on written examinations and interactive oral interviews. The selection process was overseen by PSC Chairman, retired DIG Hashimu Argungu, along with other commission members, including retired Supreme Court Justice Paul Adamu Galumje and retired DIG Taiwo Lakanu.
DIG Argungu urged the newly appointed officers to support the Inspector-General of Police in maintaining law and order across Nigeria, ensuring the security and stability of the country.
