Katsina State Governor, Mallam Dikko Radda, has received news of the passing of Colonel Joseph Akaagerger, a former Military Administrator of Katsina State. The retired army officer, who died at the age of 69, served in Katsina between August 1998 and May 1999 during a pivotal time in Nigeria’s democratic transition.
Governor Radda shared his condolences through a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Mohammed, in Katsina on Monday, May 19, 2025.
The governor noted that Colonel Akaagerger played an important role during the transitional military-to-civilian government period in Nigeria. He described the late officer as a man of honor and integrity who contributed greatly to the development of Katsina State within a short period.
“In the brief but impactful period he spent steering the affairs of our state, he built bridges that have withstood the test of time. Today, we don’t just mourn a former Military Administrator – we mourn a brother who bound Katsina and Benue with cords of friendship that death cannot sever,” the statement read.
Colonel Joseph Akaagerger was born on May 5, 1956. After completing his military career, he continued his service to the nation through political leadership. In April 2007, he was elected Senator representing Benue North East in the National Assembly.
Governor Radda also noted that Akaagerger was a man of discipline and intellect, combining his military experience with legal knowledge and a dedication to democratic ideals. He mentioned that although Akaagerger was a son of Benue State, his service and legacy in Katsina earned him a special place in the hearts of its people.
The statement continued with Radda extending his condolences to the Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, and the entire Akaagerger family.
“As we bid farewell to this legal luminary, distinguished soldier, and true servant of the people, we find comfort in the legacies of unity, selfless service, and unwavering integrity he has left behind. May God forgive his shortcomings, and may his family find the strength to bear this irreparable loss,” the governor added.
