The Nigerian House of Representatives has announced its plan to hand over N704.91 million to President Bola Tinubu on December 31, 2024.
The funds, collected from half-year salary deductions of members, are intended to provide relief to Nigerians struggling with economic hardship, particularly following the removal of the fuel subsidy.
This decision traces back to July 18, when the House unanimously agreed to donate 50% of their salaries over six months to support vulnerable citizens. The resolution came after a motion was presented during a plenary session, highlighting the urgent need to address the suffering of ordinary Nigerians.
During Thursday’s plenary, the Speaker reminded lawmakers of their earlier commitment.
He stated, “If you recall, about five months ago, we decided to contribute half of our salaries to address the critical needs of the Nigerian people. I am happy to inform you that so far, we have contributed N704,907,578.82.”
He further announced plans to lead a delegation to present the funds to President Tinubu, ensuring its use exclusively for Nigerians in need.
The motion was originally proposed by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who urged his colleagues to make a financial sacrifice.
“Our salary is N600,000 a month. I want to plead that we let go of 50 per cent of our salary for a period of six months,” Kalu said, emphasizing the importance of supporting the government’s efforts to address Nigeria’s challenges.
