The All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced its intention to establish control over Rivers State, highlighting plans to strengthen its influence in the region.
This declaration comes amid a brewing political conflict between Rivers State Governor, Sim Fubara, and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who is currently serving as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) under the APC-led administration.
At a party event in Abuja on Thursday, APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje addressed party members, expressing confidence in the party’s future in Rivers State.
Ganduje emphasized that the APC is determined to rebuild and reposition its state chapter to become a powerful force within Rivers.
The chairman’s statement was made while welcoming Dawari Ibietela George, the 2023 governorship candidate of the Action Alliance (AA), who officially returned to the APC.
George’s return is seen by Ganduje as a major boost to the APC’s presence and prospects in Rivers State. Ganduje praised George’s political experience and capabilities, describing him as a “big fish” who can help the APC solidify its influence in the state.
During discussions between the party leadership and George, the focus remained on strategies to strengthen the APC’s presence in Rivers and transform it into a party that effectively represents the interests of the state’s citizens.
Ganduje assured George and other returning members of a well-structured platform within the APC, ensuring they would be treated as equal members with every other party affiliate.
“Rivers State will be completely APC. You are now equal members with every other member of the party. We are bent on widening democracy in the country,” Ganduje added.
