Manchester City midfielder Rodri has sparked intense debate in the football world after making controversial statements comparing Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Speaking on the Spanish television show El Hormiguero on Wednesday, Rodri shared his views on the long-standing rivalry between the two football legends.
“Lionel Messi is the greatest player of all time, without any doubt,” Rodri declared, reigniting the endless discussion among football enthusiasts. He further explained his perspective, noting that Ronaldo’s achievements are more a product of effort than natural ability.
“Cristiano has managed to match Messi without innate talent. But those of us who have played against them can see the difference,” Rodri elaborated.
The midfielder also reflected on the challenges of facing both players on the pitch. He acknowledged Ronaldo’s skill in specific areas, saying, “With Cristiano, we didn’t want him to step into the box because he was lethal there.” However, he praised Messi for being a constant threat, adding, “But with Messi, the danger was everywhere on the pitch.”
Rodri’s remarks have ignited a fierce discussion among fans and pundits, with many seeing his comments as a slight against Ronaldo’s natural abilities. Others view it as an honest assessment based on personal experience.
During the same interview, Rodri also spoke about his recent Ballon d’Or victory, where he surpassed Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior.
Reflecting on the win, he shared, “There was a rumour three weeks prior that Vinicius was going to win, so I had no optimism going to the gala.” Despite the speculation, Rodri was crowned the winner, a moment he described as unexpected yet joyous.
