Russia has reacted positively to the suspension of US military aid to Ukraine, calling it the “best contribution” to peace. The decision comes after tensions between former US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, leading to an immediate halt in military assistance.
The New York Times reported that the freeze, which was announced on Monday, has affected hundreds of millions of dollars in weapon shipments that were in the process of being sent to Ukraine. The move has raised concerns about Ukraine’s ability to sustain its defense against Russia’s ongoing military operation, which began in February 2023.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted that stopping military aid from the US could encourage Ukraine to engage in peace talks. “If the United States stops (military supplies), this would probably be the best contribution to peace,” he said.
Peskov also noted that the United States has been Ukraine’s primary military supporter and that the situation will continue to evolve. “We will see how the situation on the ground evolves,” he added.
