Saudi Authorities Bar Sheikh Gumi From Participating in 2025 Hajj

The Saudi Arabian government has reportedly barred prominent Nigerian cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi from taking part in the 2025 Hajj pilgrimage, despite earlier receiving a valid visa to travel to the Kingdom. The cleric, who is based in Kaduna, shared the development through his official Facebook page on Monday, confirming his return to Nigeria.

Gumi stated that he had already completed parts of the Hajj rituals but was ultimately unable to continue due to concerns raised by Saudi authorities. He said that although he was granted access to travel initially, officials in the Kingdom later became “uncomfortable” with his presence, a move that led to his early departure from the pilgrimage.

According to the post, Gumi wrote, “Alhamdullilahi I’ve already completed my Hajj 2025 and I’m at home in our beloved country Nigeria. Allah said in Q2/196: ‘And accomplish the Hajj i.e pilgrimage and the Umra for Allah, but if you are prevented, (slaughter) the offering available with you (meaning, you are then free from Hajj or Umra).’”

He noted that the reason behind the Saudi authorities’ decision may be linked to his public opinions on international political issues. Gumi has been known for his strong positions on various global matters, which may have prompted Saudi officials to act with caution during this year’s Hajj season.

Despite the setback, Gumi thanked the Nigerian government for stepping in promptly. He noted that officials in Abuja have promised to raise the issue directly with their Saudi counterparts in order to seek clarification and possibly resolve the matter.

He continued, “For some obvious reasons, my views about world politics, the Saudi authorities are uncomfortable about my presence in the Hajj after giving me the Hajj visa. Thanks to the Nigerian authorities, who have pledged to take up the matter immediately with the Saudi authorities. That is the value of our cherished freedom and democracy.”

Now back in Nigeria, Gumi said he would focus on his health and personal projects, including farming. He also urged Nigerians to remember the remaining pilgrims in their prayers and to continue to seek peace and unity for the country.

“I’m now free to attend to my health and farming activities. We should continue to pray for the safe return of all pilgrims, peace and prosperity for our dear nation,” he added.
