Security operatives in Anambra State have successfully rescued a kidnapped victim and killed one of the suspected kidnappers during a gun battle in Ihiala. The operation was carried out by a joint team of the Police, Military, and Ihiala Vigilante group.
The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Tochukwu Ikenga, noted that the security team intercepted a black shuttle bus with registration number RSH 255MS, which was moving in a suspicious manner. When the officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the armed occupants inside the bus opened fire. This led to an exchange of gunfire between the security team and the suspected kidnappers.
During the shootout, one suspect was killed, while four others managed to escape into the bush with bullet wounds. The fleeing suspects left behind the vehicle, which was later searched by the security operatives. Inside the bus, they discovered a blindfolded victim who had been tied up at the hands and legs, with his mouth sealed. The victim, who was suspected to have been kidnapped, was immediately rescued. The police provided him with first aid and later took him in for questioning.
The police have taken custody of the recovered vehicle and have launched a manhunt for the escaped suspects. Security forces are also working with medical facilities in the state to track down anyone seeking treatment for gunshot wounds.
Ikenga urged hospitals and medical centers to report any individuals with bullet wounds or suspicious injuries to the nearest police station.
“This measure is critical to the ongoing effort to apprehend the fleeing suspects and prevent further escalation of criminal activities in the state,” he stated.
