Retired Nigerian military veteran, Colonel Nasiru Salami, has expressed deep concern over the outdated weapons used by security operatives in the fight against the terror group Lakurawa. The group has been intensifying its attacks in the North-West region, leaving destruction and fear in its wake.
During an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Wednesday, which coincided with the commemoration of the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, Col. Salami highlighted a troubling imbalance. He pointed out that the weapons carried by Nigerian security forces are significantly inferior to those used by the insurgents.
“Somebody called me from Maiduguri yesterday and said this Lakurawa, they have divided themselves into two, attacking from different sides,” Salami shared, emphasizing the strategic advantage held by the terror group.
The 76-year-old veteran disclosed that many security operatives are still using outdated rifles like the GT3. According to him, these weapons lack the range and accuracy necessary for effective combat.
“Now, our men are using useless rifles that cannot go beyond a quarter of a mile, but these people, when they shoot from a far distance, they will aim and get the target,” he said.
Col. Salami urged the Federal Government to prioritize the safety and effectiveness of the nation’s security forces by providing them with modern assault rifles and better equipment. He stressed that equipping the troops with advanced weapons could significantly enhance their performance and reduce casualties.
He also called for improved support and motivation for security personnel, pointing out that morale and proper tools go hand-in-hand in achieving military success.
Recounting his own military service, Salami shared memories of enlisting in the Nigerian Army in October 1967 during the Biafra War. After just six weeks of training, he was deployed to the frontlines, where he suffered life-altering injuries, including the amputation of his right foot. Despite this, he returned to active duty, showcasing his unwavering dedication to the nation.
