Senate Forms 18-Member Committee to Monitor Rivers Sole Administrator

The Senate has announced the creation of a special committee made up of 18 members to oversee the operations of the Rivers State Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.). This move was revealed by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, during the Senate’s plenary session held on Tuesday, May 6, 2025.

Akpabio noted that the decision was aimed at promoting better oversight and ensuring openness in the management of public affairs in Rivers State. He stated that the committee’s role is to provide close legislative supervision of the Sole Administrator’s actions to maintain proper checks and balances.

Senate Majority Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, has been appointed as the chairman of the committee. Other members include prominent senators from various political backgrounds and regions.

Among them are Adamu Aliero, Osita Izunaso, Osita Ngwu (South East), Kaka Shehu, Aminu Abass, Tokunbo Abiru, Adeniyi Adebire (Ondo), Sani Musa, Simon Lalong, Asuquo Ekpeyong, Adams Oshiomhole, Ireti Kingibe (Labour Party), Onyekachi, Idiat Adebule, Ide Dafinone, and Mohammed from Jigawa State (APC).

The Clerk of the Senate will also be part of the group.

While addressing the chamber, Akpabio noted that the committee must begin work immediately and treat their assignment with the urgency it deserves. He also mentioned that the structure of the committee could be revised later based on further discussions among lawmakers.

The Senate President explained that the goal is to ensure that Rivers State remains on a path of responsible leadership and democratic practice, especially under the Sole Administrator’s watch. He urged the committee to carry out their responsibilities in a transparent and accountable manner that reflects the expectations of the Nigerian people.
