Senator Builds Military Base in Kogi to Combat Insecurity

Senator Sunday Karimi, representing Kogi West in the Senate, has completed the construction of a military base in the state to combat rising insecurity. The base, located on the outskirts of Egbe in Yagba West Local Government Area, aims to tackle the growing problem of insecurity, particularly in border areas shared by Kogi and Kwara States.

During the official inauguration ceremony on Saturday, Senator Karimi explained that the project was initiated to assist the military and other security agencies in responding quickly to criminal activities. He noted that the base would improve the fight against terrorism, kidnapping, and other crimes in the region.

In his speech, Senator Karimi said, “I conceived the idea of the military base in January this year to assist the Nigerian military and security agencies to ensure quick response in combating terrorists, kidnappers, and criminals whose activities in recent times around the border of Kogi and Kwara… is becoming an issue of national concern.”

The senator also highlighted that the military base would act as a deterrent, discouraging criminals from using the large forest areas between Kogi and Kwara as hideouts. With its strategic location, the base is expected to restore peace and security in affected communities.

The newly built military base is well-equipped, featuring two hostels with 85-bed spaces for soldiers. These facilities are furnished with all necessary amenities for comfortable living. The base also includes an armoury and fully equipped office spaces for the Commander, providing a well-rounded environment for military operations.l

Governor Usman Ododo, represented by his Special Adviser on Security, Commander Jerry Omadara (retd), praised Senator Karimi’s initiative. “I, therefore, thank Senator Sunday Karimi for this wonderful initiative in the fulfillment of his constituent’s responsibility. Therefore, the establishment of this Forward Operating Base will serve to form a chain of influx into Kogi State, provide the needed safety for our people,” he said.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, represented by the GOC 2 Division, Major General Obinna Onubogu, also expressed appreciation for Senator Karimi’s efforts. He remarked, “Let me publicly extend my heartfelt appreciation to the distinguished senator for his tenacity and commitment in spearheading the construction and completion of this strategic facility.”
