Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan received a grand welcome from her supporters in Kogi State on Tuesday, despite a government order prohibiting public rallies and gatherings.
Supporters from the five local government areas of Kogi Central assembled early in Ihima, Okehi Local Government Area, to greet the embattled lawmaker. The atmosphere was festive, with music and celebrations filling the air as people awaited her arrival.
In a dramatic entrance, Akpoti-Uduaghan arrived in a white helicopter, drawing loud cheers from the enthusiastic crowd. Addressing her supporters, she dismissed the government’s restrictions, maintaining that her visit was not political but simply a way to celebrate the Sallah festival with her constituents.
She stated, “Yesterday, we heard on the news that rallies and gatherings will not be allowed, that roads will be blocked, and convoys leading into the state will not be allowed. I knew that we were the targets. But then I said, this is not political season, this is not campaign time.”
She further noted, “We are not having a rally. This is just me, the Senator representing Kogi Central, coming down to her people to celebrate this festive time – the Sallah with you, and there is nothing wrong with that. I am breaking no law. This is Nigeria. We have the right to be free, to express our choice in gatherings and celebrations.”
Her arrival came despite a curfew imposed by the Okehi LGA chairman and warnings from the police. The restrictions were reportedly put in place due to security concerns, though her supporters viewed them as an attempt to prevent her from engaging with the people.
Akpoti-Uduaghan has been facing political challenges in recent months. She had earlier accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Governor Yahaya Bello of orchestrating threats against her.
Additionally, she is currently dealing with a recall process initiated against her, while also being suspended from the Senate amid allegations involving Akpabio.
