The Nigerian government has taken a significant step toward the extradition of Simon Ekpa, a known Biafra agitator. Formal extradition requirements have been submitted to the Finnish government as part of efforts to hold him accountable for alleged crimes.
The announcement was made by General Christopher Musa, Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, during an interview on Channels Television.
He expressed optimism about the case, saying: “Well, I’m sure he’s cooling off somewhere. Legal action will be taken accordingly. I don’t want to say too much, but I’m glad he’s been arrested. The Federal Government has provided most of the required documentation to the Finnish Government, so I’m confident the right steps will be taken.”
Simon Ekpa, along with four others, was arrested by Finnish authorities in November 2024. They are suspected of involvement in terror-related activities, including inciting violence and financing terrorism. According to reports, Ekpa allegedly used social media to spread separatist propaganda and encourage violent actions aimed at achieving the secession of southeastern Nigeria.
The Lahti District Court in Finland ordered his remand, citing probable cause for public incitement to commit crimes with terrorist intent. This development marks a crucial step in Nigeria’s efforts to address security challenges posed by separatist movements.
