The 12 victims of Friday night’s mob attack in Mangun District of Mangu Local Government Area, Plateau State, have been laid to rest at the Hayi Muslim Cemetery in Mangu.
These victims, mostly women and children, had embarked on a journey from Zaria in Kaduna State to attend a wedding ceremony but never reached their destination.
The group, made up of 31 people from the Basawa community in Zaria, had been traveling in an 18-seater bus owned by Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria.
Their trip took a tragic turn when they lost their way and reportedly stopped to ask for directions in Mangun District, located in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Instead of help, they were attacked by a mob, leading to the death of 12 and injuries to several others.
Sheikh Suleiman Haruna led the funeral rites and offered prayers for peace.
Speaking to the mourners, he urged them to view the tragic event as part of divine will and warned against retaliatory actions. “Let us not seek revenge,” he said. He also noted the prompt efforts by security forces and local leaders to contain the situation.
Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State condemned the killings, calling them “barbaric and senseless.” He urged security agencies to find and punish those responsible without delay. He also called on the Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, to ensure justice is served swiftly.
The Kaduna governor assured citizens that his administration is actively supporting the victims’ families and that the 11 injured survivors are receiving proper medical care at Mangu General Hospital.
