Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has called on Nigerians to stop living in fear and begin speaking out against the current state of the country.
Speaking during the Labour Party’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Abuja, Obi said Nigeria is quickly deteriorating and requires urgent attention to prevent a complete breakdown.
“Do not fear anybody. Those who were afraid yesterday didn’t do any better,” Obi stated during his address. “We must speak out when things are going wrong. Nigeria is collapsing. The numbers are clear; the indices are clear—people are getting poorer every day.”
Obi noted that the Labour Party must act as one united group in order to make a meaningful impact in the political space. He described the party as a family where everyone’s opinion should count.
“Labour Party has chosen to be a family, and we must do everything as a family. It’s not about Peter Obi’s choice; it’s everyone’s choice. This family excludes no one. We want to build a party that is fair and just,” he said.
He further noted the importance of preparing for future elections by ensuring the party selects competent and dedicated candidates. Obi emphasized that the next phase of elections should not be about random selections but about choosing individuals who are ready to serve and represent the people effectively.
“We want to go into the next election fully prepared, offering Nigerians the best and most competent candidates for the House of Representatives, the Senate, Governorships, and the Presidency,” he stated.
Obi also addressed the issue of loyalty and commitment within the party, stating that those interested in contesting elections under the Labour Party must first show they are serious members of the party. “We want to correct the mistakes we made in the past. Anyone seeking to contest under our party must be a committed member, not just someone passing through. They must be competent,” he added.
